1.2 Course Introduction

Systems analysis and design is a process focused on the development of new and the extension of existing information systems. It requires a unique set of problem-solving skills and knowledge of the information systems and business domains
– such skills are in high demand in industry.
Analysis and design of an information system is an activity that is carried out by a systems analyst with the involvement of various other stakeholders who are the source of requirements for the system. As such it is paramount that as business professionals, students are competent in this area to be able to participate in the process of developing new and extending existing information systems.
This course provides students with an understanding of various systems development approaches and indepth knowledge of and experience with the requirements analysis and mdeling aspects that lead up to system design and implementation.
Course Changes in Response to Previous Student Feedback
1) The UML assignment will also be offered optionally as an individual or as a peer assignment (team of 2 students). It will always be possible to undertake this assignment as an ‘individual assignment. As we will discuss during the lecture time, both forms of assignment (i.e. team versus individual) come with pros and cons. Consequently, there is no “better’ – it depends on the individual circumstances of each student what is considered the best form of assignment.

2) The focus of the course is on enhancing students’ workplace readiness. Thus, this course is clasifed as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course that explicitly integrates theory with practice in a way that offers students an opportunity to build employability. The course achieves this integration by focusing on the creation of an ISD artifact using a low-code platform (i.e., Mendix).
3) Use of the e-assessment software Inspeara for the exam as a high-quality assessment environment that was trialed in 2021.

2. Aims, Objectives & Graduate Atributes

2.1 Course Aims

The understanding of how organizations utilize technology to master intermal problems, improve efficiency and unlock innovative opportunites depends to a large extent of their ability to analyse requirements for and create designs of information systems. This course aims to provide students with the concepts, knowledge and skills required to analyse and design information systems and builds the related problem solving skills. The course concentrates on the front end of the information systems development life cycle and lightly touches on the implementation of software and their testing and maintenance.

2.2 Learning Objectives

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
1 Describe the major alternative methodologies (eg., agile, lean) that are used in developing information systems and decide which methodology to use in a certain
2 Prepare, and use various information gathering, techniques for eliciting user information requirements and systemt expectations.
3 Construct and interpret a variety, of system description documents, including UML use case activity, cass, sequence, Statechart and entifty-relationship diagrams, Structured English, as Welf as screen, form, and report layouts.
