Dissertation

类似所见即所得的文字处理程序。格式要求不过分限制;

Dissertation formatting
You are recommended to use LaTeX. This is the professional and most common choice which
produces the best results. Alternatively you may use LibreOffice, Microsoft Word or any other
similar WYSIWYG word processing program. The format requirements are not overly restrictive;
for example there is no requirement to use a particular character typeface. However, do not use
too many different typefaces in your dissertation, or in general spend too much time developing
an elaborate visual presentation. It is better to keep the look of your project dissertation simple
and straightforward, relying on standard layouts provided by the word processing program of
your choice. An overelaborate presentation may result in a waste of time and actually even in a
negative impression.

Dissertation length
No absolute limits are given, however it is expected to result in a document in the region of 50
pages, which is about 10,000 words of content plus equations, figures, tables, etc.

Dissertation structure

Abstract
On the page immediately following the title page you must report a short abstract giving a
descriptive summary of your project. The abstract typically consists of three short parts:
• What the dissertation is about, the principle aims and goals, and specific challenges.
• How you carried out the project, what work it involved and what you learned.
• Main results and achievements.
The abstract must be readable quickly by people with various backgrounds to get an overview of
what your dissertation is about, so make sure it does not become too long or technical; do not
use acronyms without introducing them.

Table of contents
A contents list should follow the abstract.

Figures and table lists
Sometimes a list of figures and tables with their captions is included here.

Acknowledgements
This gives you a chance to thank whoever has helped/sustained you during this work.
The dissertation
After the content (and figure/table) lists, a typical structure of a master’s dissertation is:
1. Introduction: outlines the project and gives a clear statement of the objectives and
methodologies. The most important thing here is a clear thesis statement, e.g. in the form
“The hypothesis of this study is that …”, and a statement of the methodology for
evaluating that hypothesis, e.g. in the form “This hypothesis will be tested by …”.
2. Literature review: reports and briefly discuss all the current literature that is directly
relevant to the study.
3. Methodology: discusses the methodology necessary to achieve the project aims,
making it clear to a non-specialist but technically competent reader. Details of
mathematical calculations, algorithm implementations or simulations must be reported in
a way that can be checked. Where it makes the text more readable, an appendix can be
used for some of the details. Key code portions can be reported, but it is recommended
to describe only the algorithm in the main text and possibly report actual short pieces of
code in the appendix. Long full code listings should be uploaded separately on Moodle.
4. Results: reports the achievements. This part typically contains figures and tables with all
relevant results. It is important to demonstrate and document that the project aims have
been achieved.
5. Conclusions and future directions: includes a summary of the project findings, a
discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the model/method used, and possible
improvements and further developments.
6. References: lists all the referenced material in a consistent, appropriate format (see
below for formatting rules).
7. Appendix: any material that you feel worth including, but does not deserve to be
presented in the main body of the dissertation.

The standard for a master’s dissertation is to apply and increment scientific knowledge, possibly
by validating or extending existing methods. A component of original research is not a
requirement of the project, but will be given due credit if present.

At the end of the thesis you must put a copy of your project summary.
