In this assignment you have the opportunity to critically analyse research and theory in a particular area of Music Psychology that is interesting to you. You are required to review three research studies, describing the research method used and the findings. You should then critically appraise the approach taken by the authors by considering why they used a particular method and comparing the findings with your lived experiences with music. Using first person is acceptable in this assignment when discussing your analysis of the articles as well as your own lived experience.

You are welcome to focus on one single topic and choose three studies related to this topic. You may also focus on combining two topics, and choosing studies that relate to one or both of these topics. For example, the following weeks of material may supplement one another well, but you could also draw on literature across other combinations, or simply focus on one:

• Music and Emotions / Music and Adolescents
• Music and Cognition / Music in Schools
• Music and Memory / Music and Older People
• Music Consumption / Music Performance

These pairings are just suggestions, you may choose any topic area you like. You are welcome to draw on literature from the recommended readings on the Readings Online page, but you cannot use any readings we analyse in class or on Perusall. Please make sure to check the list of articles that cannot be used before you include them in your assignment.

The assignment should be structured as follows:

Introduction – Outline your interest in the topic area chosen and describe who you have identified as the key theorists in that field by including approximately 3- 5 references to their articles / books and explaining why you think they are significant. The key theorists should not be first authors of the studies you analyse. (approx. 450 words)
2. Study 1 – Briefly summarise the research undertaken by the authors, critically appraise the research design and draw on your lived experience to consider whether the research findings are meaningful (approx. 500 words)
