Everything in this course builds up to you completing your own folklore project. At the end of
the class, you will submit a 6-7 page (double-spaced, etc.) paper that will require you to collect
some folklore and analyze that material.

This project will have three options:
A. Conduct an ethnographic interview with a tradition bearer on their folklore and analyze
the interview using the analytical frameworks discussed in class
B. Collect at least 3 examples of a particular genre or type of folklore and compare and
contrast those examples according to the analytical frameworks discussed in class
C. Undergo a “folklore practicum” where you learn a folk skill (i.e. needlecraft, how to
make a traditional dish, how to carve, how to play a folk song, etc.) and analyze and
reflect upon that experience in relation to the folklore concepts discussed in class

Clearly, the paper is more than just a description of folklore as it includes an analysis and/or
reflection on how what you collect or do relates to class concepts and analytical frameworks.
Essays will be graded on both the quality of the material collected, and the quality of the
analysis.

It is important to note that each of these options requires some element of folklore
collection and documentation. In the interview-based option, your interview will be what you
collect/document. In the genre/collection based option, you’ll have to have at least three different
examples so you can consider patterns within that collection. In the folklore practicum, your
experience of learning should be documented somehow. In this sense, you’re both practicing
folklore fieldwork and folklore analysis, which is why this project is more than just a paper.

Below, I have written a prompt for each of the three options. You will pick which option you’d
like to complete and propose that option in Week 4 (as your Short Assignment 4). I will then
approve your topic, and you can start pursuing that topic in the last couple weeks of class.

OPTION A: Ethnographic Interview
For this option, you will choose either a tradition or a folk group to investigate, and you will
conduct at least one 30+ minute interview to investigate that tradition. The tradition could be an
exploration of a folk object that has a pattern of use, creation, or passing down, or a custom like
what you do around the holidays. You may want to examine family foodways or talk to someone
who’s a masterful folk artist (quilter, carver, etc.). Maybe you want to capture some family
stories from your parents or grandparents, or talk to a co-worker about your occupational
folklore—there are many options for how to approach this assignment.
