MATH4018 STOCHASTIC FINANCIAL MODELLING
Essay
Choose one of the following three topics.
1. Option Pricing: A Simplified Approach. This essay should be based on the paper ‘Option
Pricing: A Simplified Approach’ by J.C. Cox, S.A. Ross and M. Rubinstein (Journal of Financial
Economics (1967) 7, 229–263).
2. Option pricing: an overview This essay should be based on the paper ‘Option pricing
methods: an overview’ by C. van Hulle (Insurance: Mathematics and Economics (1988) 7,
139–152).
3. Capital Asset Prices. This essay should be based on the paper ‘Capital Asset Prices:
A Theory of Market Equilibrium under Conditions of Risk’ by W.F. Sharpe Journal of Finance
(1964) 19, 425–442).
The essay should comprise a comprehensive summary of the paper in your own words as
evidence of your understanding. It might further include some more detailed proofs than are
given in the paper or an extension of results of the paper.
Submission requirements The essay is required to be word processed. The length should
be between 4 and 6 pages in total, and in 12-point font with appropriate margins. Any essay
exceeding 7 pages (or using inappropriate fonts, margins or other methods to artificially con-
form to the page limit) will be penalised. Submission will be online only through the module
page on Moodle.
The deadline for handing in the essay is 3pm on Wednesday 6th May 2021. The essay
should be submited via the Assignment Activity labelled “Coursework Essay Submission” on
the MATH4018 Moodle page. When submitting you will be asked to certify the work is your
own, and in general be aware that submitting any work for university assessment you are
claiming the work to be your own.
Plagiarism. You should be familiar with the Student Handbook guidelines on plagiarism.

Assessment guidelines. The mark for the essay will be awarded based on the evidence of
your understanding, against the following broad areas
