Research Concept Paper

The research concept paper is due in Week 9 of MN6021. The paper provides the student with an opportunity to present their proposed topic supported by an annotated bibliography. The research concept is a 15-20-page document (excluding reference pages) that describes the reasons for the research (the problem statement, research questions, and theoretical justification for the research in the form of an annotated bibliography) as well as a proposed methodology and a statement of intent to conduct ethical research. The content of the research concept paper must align with the Research Concept Paper Grading Rubric and the following structure:

1. Introduction (1-2 paragraphs)
2. Introduction to the Topic
3. Why is it of interest to you, the student?
4. Problem Statement (3 – 4 paragraphs)
5. Presented in statement format, includes citations (within 3 years) to the literature regarding who says the problem is real.

1. The problem (also, opportunity or gap in the literature) represents some gap in the knowledge base and understanding about a real-world phenomenon

1. The research paper’s purpose is to provide new information (or new knowledge) about the problem

1. The knowledge could provide new insight, confirmation of facts surrounding the problem, a better understanding of the problem

1. Discusses why the problem is worthy of researching?
2. What is the scholarly justification (rationale) for researching this problem (whose research is the student building upon?)

3. Annotated Bibliography. Present a minimum of 12 citations followed by a brief (150 – 250 words) descriptive, evaluative, and reflective paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited (https://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography)

2. Be sure to discuss baseline theory.

5. Keep the question(s) to one sentence.
6. Define a minimum of 2 questions.

iii. Be explicit (what or which concepts are involved)

5. Methodological Choice (1 page)
6. Identify what methodology best suits the research questions.
7. Justify the methods of data collection with reference to their advantages.
8. Identify and justify the sampling strategy to be deployed.
9. Ethical Concerns (2 paragraphs)
10. State that you intend to conduct the research paper in an ethical manner.
11. Identify any potential ethical issues you feel apply and how you intend to manage them.

The research concept paper should be typed in an easy-to-read font, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing,alignment justified, and using standard margins. Include page numbers.

The penalty for late submission of assignments where no extension has been agreed (and confirmed in writing by your lecturer) is one grade per day late (i.e., A1 becomes A2 if it is submitted one day late, weekends included).

Repeat Mechanism is a revised Research Concept Paper. All repeat grades will be capped at C3,except for I grades.

Class attendance (expected) and participation in discussions are essential parts of your learning. The quality of your contributions is more important than quantity. Be prepared to present your analysis and action in a concise, logical fashion. You should be able to refer to specific outside materials and/or case material to support your points. Chatham House Rules: This module relies on open discussion.
