As part of this challenge, you are expected to trade this item with real life people for other items of increasing value over the duration of the course. That is, you are expected to do your trading outside of the classroom in your own time throughout the duration of the course. Attempt to enhance the value of each traded item until your final trade, which should occur before the end of course. You are expected to bring in your final trade to workshop to class at a designated time (will be discussed in class).
Reflection is defined as “a cognitive activity for monitoring, evaluating, and modifying one’s thinking and process (Saito and Mewa, 2007, p. 215). It requires active engagement on the part of individuals and is prompted by unusual experiences. In order to engage in reflection, individuals need to examine their own reactions, beliefs, evidences and assumptions in relation to the situation at hand and implement their new learnings into their future experiences (Rogers, 2001).
Your understanding of the impact the Creative Trading task has on yourself, and how your experience/s link to some or all of the creativity and innovation modules covered in class, will contribute to the development of your creative and strategic thinking, helping you further expand your mental models.
You are encouraged to regularly write down your thoughts and ideas related to the experience of this task. This will help you document your emotions and insights throughout the course, and give you a repertoire of information to draw upon when writing your creative trading task.
Task
You are asked to submit a reflective piece on your experience of participating in the Trading Game throughout the course.
As part of your reflection you must report:
- The items that you traded.
- The roadblocks faced with each trade and how you overcame them.
- Your rationale and creative strategies for seeking each trade.
- How you created (or failed to create) value through your trades up to your final trade.
- Your emotional journey throughout each trade.
- Your personal insights in relation to the modules delivered in the workshops. That is, you are asked to draw on theories related to creativity and innovation such as creative practice, multiple perspectives and idea generation.
- The possible implications of your learnings on your everyday professional practice.
When writing your reflection for submission, ensure you include as headings the three components below. With each component, you will find a number of related questions that may help you craft your report. The aim of these questions is to trigger your thinking and provide you with some direction as to how to write you report. You may include additional information that you think is relevant to your experience and learning.
- Identify an experience – What happened? (maximum 500 words)
Describe what happened for you preparing and participating in creating value from an initial item. What struck you about this experience?
- Reflect on
- the process of starting the trade
- the chain of events in relation to the trades
- approaching people to trade
- How and why you decided what to do and where to trade
- How you felt during the different stages of the trading process
- How you used creativity to manage your trades
- How you overcame the mental roadblock related to trading.
- What is innovative (and what is not) about your approaches
- Consider how you experienced this process or felt about doing the trades, particularly in the context of one or more themes of the workshops.
- Analyse the relevance of the experience – So What? (maximum 500 words)
- What does this mean?
- Why do you think this happened?
- How does this relate to the modules delivered in class?
- Does this support the theory and learnings in class?
- How is your experience linked to your understanding of creativity and innovation?
- Apply the learning to your personal or professional life – Now what? (maximum 500 words)
- What have you learned from this creative trading task?
- What will you do differently now?
- What do you need to explore further?
- How will you think about creativity and innovation differently?
- What did you learn through this experience? (about yourself, about creativity an innovation, about your major field of study, about your work, etc.)
- What is now evident to you that was not before the assessment?
- What might you do now with this learning and how will you apply the strategies that you’ve learned in your organisation?
