Overview

Students will create a short animation artwork that represents the theme of “Anticipation”. With the pandemic greatly impacting all aspects of our lives, we have all had to adapt at an unprecedented level to our changing environments.

Students should think back on something absent from their lives during the pandemic that they have recently gotten back or are looking forward to getting back in the post-pandemic world (school, social activities, live sports, music, etc.). From this, students should create an animation that represents their anticipation or emotions towards the subject. How you represent this theme in the animation is up to you, but remember it is an artwork, and I encourage you to be more creative with how you represent the concept and that you are free to experiment with the art style.

Using the principles of animation (follow through, anticipation, secondary action, arcs, timing, staging), students will make a short animation and render each frame using the arnold renderer. The animation should use a range of techniques from the course such as keyframing, rigging,
deformers, motion paths, parenting, set-driven keys or physics simulations (you do not need to use all of these but should use a combination of some of them).

Students should consider how staging (lighting, camera movement and sound) can further enhance their final animation.

Students will submit a fully rendered video file (12-20 seconds – 288-480 frames) that includes sound, a Playblast animation along with a brief explanation of your final animation’s concept, how it uses the principles of animation and what cinematography tools it utilizes.

The visuals that you animate are open but must contain a minimum of one model rigged by you. You may enhance your scenes further by adding in background models or other animated models (keyframed, set-driven keys, physics simulations, etc). You may only use models you built yourself or that are present in Maya’s content browser. All rigging must be done by the student in Maya using the humanIK tools or Maya’s default rigging tools.

Your final render needs to be in video format with a soundtrack. The sound for the animation does not need to be created by you, but it does need to have to be licensed under a Creative

Commons license and be cited properly in the documentation file. The use of textures is not
mandatory for the project, but if you do use them, you can use texture files you did not create as long as you cite it properly in the documentation file.

Deliverables

Include in the folder:
1. Your Final Rendered Animation: 720 x 480px, 640 x 480px or higher, saved as an .mov or .mp4, with a soundtrack.

2. Your Playblast Animation: 720 x 480px, 640 x 480px, saved as an .mov or .mp4

3. Your Maya file, .mb or ma file

4. A short documentation (3 pages maximum) of your work in a PDF file, explaining the concept of the animation and a description of your choices and focus, as well as your process and challenges encountered

5. please upload a compressed (zipped) file of your assignment folder (including three documents: two video files, one Maya file, one PDF file) to the course eClass.
