The minor project comprises facilitation of a small group discussion in class and a write-up.
This assignment is based on one of the allocated readings outlined in the study calendar (end-of-chapter cases-readings). The discussion and a write-up require a critical review of an assigned reading, supported by relevant examples. The allocation of the article will be conducted during the first class. Small groups will be rotated and arranged by the lecturer at random. To have effective discussions of the readings, all participants need to have prepared each reading outlined in the study calendar ahead of class.
The class work should be viewed as a communication exercise to be carried out in a professional manner assuming an audience of other professionals who are not familiar with the speaker’s subject area.
To prepare a write-up you should:
a. Prepare a brief ‘point form’ summary of your understanding of a given end-of-chapter reading based on your readings, work experience, talking to industry insiders, and leaders.
Your analysis of the reading should be presented using persuasive techniques of writing. This requires you to address the reading from various perspectives.
How can various concepts of corporate strategy help to address the topic of the allocated reading? Support your discussion by using practical examples from your own life, work experience, or from media resources.
What can be learned from this reading? Can the lessons from this reading be generalised and transferred to business situations?
b. Prepare 1 or 2 questions for students at the end of your presentation to develop interaction/interest among the students. Be creative (role playing and ‘hook in’ questions to the audience are all useful).
You are invited to show your lecturer a hard copy of your draft summary of your analysis on the day of your presentation (5 pages without references, include (a) and (b), double space, 12 pt.). This will allow your lecturer to provide you with informal feedback on your draft summary. You need to read all assigned end-of-chapter readings listed in the unit guide to enable your class participation and discussion.
