Chapter 3: Methodology

3.1. Study Aim and Objectives:

The aim of the study is to investigate the perspectives of preschool teachers in Malaysia regarding play-based learning and the challenges which preschool teachers encounter in integrating play-based learning in early childhood settings in Malaysia. To this end, the proposed study seeks to achieve the following three core objectives:

  1. To determine the perspectives of teachers regarding play-based learning.
  2. To explore the benefits of play-based learning and the types of play-based learning that enhance the holistic development of the child.
  3. To examine constraints and challenges that arise in the implementation of a play-based approach for pre-schoolers in all types of preschools.

Research Questions:

Challenges in integrating play-based learning in early childhood settings in Malaysia.

  •   What are the barriers which preschool teachers encounter while integrating play in teaching? For instance, lack of teaching and learning resources, lack of support from school/parents, limited time allocation, lack of preparation, and shortage in supply of qualified teachers (teacher inadequate experience in integrating play-based learning).

3.2. Research Design

Mixed methods approach

  • Google form (20 responders)
  • Zoom video meeting (2 interviewers)

What is your N (sample size)

  • Non- probability – Convenience sampling

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Preschool teachers

A convenience sampling approach will be utilised; therefore, ensuring that the participants have experience and knowledge pertinent to the study; and research questions outlined, (Bryan, 2016). The study sample consisted of two  teachers from two different preschools which provide  preschool  education:  the  Ministry of  Education and a private preschool centre in the urban area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The researcher selected the case-study preschool through a non-purposive sampling method. The researcher will contact the teachers of the selected schools in Malaysia by emailing to gain consent in relation to participating in the study. Then, the researcher administered a questionnaire link to 40 educators who currently work in the trilingual preschool through the private messaging application called “WhatsApp”. Upon gaining approval from the relevant preschool school authorities both the questionnaires and to determine the perspectives of teachers regarding play-based learning through an interview. A zoom call interview was used for data collection purposes such as experiences, views, opinions, and perspectives of teachers regarding the play-based learning in an early childhood setting in Malaysia. The purpose of the interviews was to probe teachers’ understanding towards teaching and learning through play-based learning. The probing questions focused on respondents’ perspectives and understanding about the play-based approach in early childhood setting, their  practices in play-based approach to problems and challenges they faced when using play in teaching and learning languages with their children.
