The aim of this assessment is to develop your research skills in independently investigating and reviewing a specific OB research area and to cultivate your ability to relate and apply OB knowledge to your daily work and life. You are required to pick one topic from the list provided in Appendix 1 and conduct a thorough review of the research literature related to the topic. The topics provided are important OB concepts that have shaped the theory and practice in management. Pick a topic that you are most interested in and that you think relates closely to your ideal career path. You need to identify and review the key peer-reviewed academic journal articles related to the topic. Appendix 2 provides a list of top tier management journals. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and you can use articles from journals that are not on the list. However, it is a good idea to use papers from these journals if they relate to your topic, as higher quality research is usually published in more prestigious journals. Number of citations is also usually a good indicator of how influential the article is; 100+ citations is considered highly-cited, 1000+ likely indicates a very influential paper. You’ll also want to focus on more recently published articles, but do not exclude influential papers just because they are old.

The literature review has three components: conceptualisation, research summary and practical application.

  1. In conceptualisation you need to provide a clear understanding of the focal concept. For example, how it is defined? How has the definition evolved over time? Are there competing definitions? Why is this concept important? How is it conceptually different from similar concepts?
  2. In research summary you need to provide an overview of the major research findings regarding the antecedents and consequences of the focal concept. That is, what factors can influence/strengthen/weaken your focal concept, and what important outcomes does your focal concept lead to?
  3. Finally, in practical application you need to relate the focal concept and the existing findings to your daily life and create a specific application plan. For example, what propels you to consider the concept worth applying? How does it challenge your existing beliefs? What specific actions do you need to take in order to effectively apply it? What opportunities might benefit you and what obstacles and difficulties might deter you from following through?

Please see Appendix 3 for the specific criteria with which your literature review will be evaluated.

Please follow APA (American Psychology Association) Style (Page 34 of the Monash Q Manual) throughout your literature review. The literature review should be around 2000 words (+/- 10%) excluding references. You should include at least 10 peer-reviewed academic journal articles in your reference list using APA style.

Supporting resources

The university has provided learning resources for those who are not familiar with writing a literature review; these resources are included next to this instruction document on Moodle. Furthermore, if you are not familiar with working with academic journal articles, please refer to Monash Business School’s Q Manual for step by step instructions (Q manual also can be found on Moodle). There is a video available on Moodle which discusses the Literature Review and information about how to access peer-reviewed academic journals, which are required for this assignment.
