Dissertation research plan (3,000 words excluding referencing and bibliographic information).
The dissertation research plan is a detailed, comprehensive, considered and reflective report setting out a plan of research. It is not a dissertation. Rather, it is a plan of how you would tackle a dissertation. The dissertation research plan should cover all of the following:
- the precise research questions to be addressed (including a justification of the relevance, importance, and suitability of the questions and why alternative questions were rejected);
- the precise hypothesis, ideas or arguments to be tested or demonstrated;
- research methods to be used (including an account of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods);
- an explanation of how the methods would deliver results that would answer the research questions;
- a broad description of the relevant literature and academic debates;
- an account of the theoretical or conceptual framework to be used (including a justification of why this framework is relevant, important, and suitable);
- an explanation of why and how the research would move the relevant academic debates forward (such as by addressing under-explored issues, or providing new evidence, or new arguments, ideas or theories);
- a critical reflection on any potential weaknesses or objections that could be levelled against the research project and/or its possible findings.
Please note that due to the nature and restricted word count of a dissertation research plan, we expect that the plan should NOT contain a detailed literature review of the sort found in a full dissertation. Instead, it should contain a broad a description of the relevant literature and academic debates.
